Non-linear narratives

Interessante discussão em dias de Verão no www.film-philosophy.com Salon sobre narrativas fílmicas não-lineares.
Algumas deixas para lerem durante uma pausa numa ensolarada esplanada,

«if flashbacks/forwards and dream sequences can be seen as a non-linear device. After all, they appear at the time in a character's mind and would suggest linearity in terms of time passing. However, if these flashbacks/forwards/etc. are not bound to a character but to the narrator, can we define it as non-linearity. If that is the case, it would be interesting to ask for the motivation of non-linearity. It seems to me that, as you have pointed out, from the 1990s onwards films arbitrarily employ a non-linear narrative as a style.»

«"Perhaps Memento is as non linear as a narrative can get, because some linearity is required of a narrative... that is, each present must have a past in order for the events to accumulate meaning as the narrative progresses. Otherwise could it be a narrative?" Memento is a linear narrative - it's the narration that's non-linear. That is, the way the narrative is told contains the quality of non-linearity."»

«However, if the definition of linearity is expanded to include non-chronological depictions of chronological events, then those films are indeed linear. Perhaps what is needed besides a binary of linearity/non-linearity is a spectrum of differing types or "levels" of linear displacement.»
